Hey Guys, I need some help decoding a Comet Vin...Ive tried piecing it together from the links on this site but some of the information seems to be missing or not lining up. Some help would be appreciated.

Its a 1963 Mercury Comet Convertible S-22 and here is the info from the warranty tag

Body "76B" = 2-door Convertible S-22
Color "J" = Carnival Red
Trim "55" = ??? (Note sure, the 1964 link indicated that is Red on Red? Which would make sense)
Date "08K" = 8th Day of October
DSO "22" = ??? (The 1963 link says Charlotte all other links indicate Dallas??)
Axle "5" = 3.50:1
Trans "5" = 4-Speed Manual Shift

VIN "3H18U510089"
From What I understand
3 = 1963
H = Loraine Assembly Plant ??
18 = ???? No Idea
U = ???? 6cyl 170 Cid ???
510089 = Is this the 10089 Comet made that year? 510089 Comet Ever made? 10089th comet produced from that plant? IDK

Ok and one last question, can some one please explain the DSO...Is that just the district that it was ordered from? IE someone in Dallas (or Charlotte) placed the order for the car?

Thanks Guys

Oh and BTW Greetings and thanks for having me on the board. Names Matt from Fort Worth TX!

Sort of All Mercury Consecutive build numbers start with 5 ( Ford is 1 and Lincoln 7) so it is the 10089th Comet VIN created that year. I say created because they are not necessarily built in numerical order ( although I'm sure they are close!) the 100000th car would roll the number 5 to a 6

welcome to the site Mat

I believe this is correct for the trim "Red"

It looks to me like the DSO of 22 is Dallas....which is the District for which the car was ordered

In the VIN the "18" is the Series and Body Code....I'm not sure why it's not on the list...I will double check

510089 = "Each assembly plant, with each model year, begins with consecutive unit number 500001 and continues on for each unit built."

So it would be the 10089 Mercury to be built at that plant, I think

Hey thanks guys! But could you please tell me where you found that "18" is the correct Series Body Code. Obviously, I think it is the correct code but I can't confim this with any of the sites, and a ford historian said she couldnt find it in the books. Granted she sounded like she was 20 and had never seen a Comet before in her life.

Perhaps just bad info on my part and lack of expertise on her part.

Maybe a page reference to the book where you found that info?

It's in the shop manual. They are listed model specific and may change year by year. As an example for the Mustang they would delineate between Coupe (01) Convertible (02) and Fastback (03) and later Mach1(05) and Grande(04)
